Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third most populous in the United Kingdom. Located on the River Clyde in western central Scotland, it is one of the top twenty European financial centres and is home to many of the leading companies in Scotland.
The city has the largest economy in Scotland and the third-largest GDP in the United Kingdom (only surpassed by London and Edinburgh). In the past, Glasgow was known for shipbuilding and heavy engineering, which were the leading industries in the region. Today, it has been partially replaced by a more diversified economy and jobs of all kinds are available here. Financial and commercial services, telecommunications, health care, higher education, retail and tourism have taken place, and Glasgow is now the most popular tourist destination in Scotland and one of the twenty most important financial centres in Europe.
However, a strong association has been maintained with its manufacturing past, which accounts for over 50% of Scotland’s exports of manufactured goods. Downtown streets rely on a grid system similar to that of many cities in America, which makes transportation much more comfortable than some towns. The city centre also houses four higher education centres in Glasgow – Strathclyde University, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the Glasgow College of Art and the University of Glasgow Caledonian.
